Heavy Duty Power & Free installed at Airbus wing manufacturing plant

Posted on 31st August 2012 by Richard Deacon

When Airbus, the major European Aircraft manufacturer, wanted to replace their aging overhead power & free conveyor at their wing manufacturing plant in Broughton, Cheshire. Midland Handling were the obvious choice due to our many years experience in manufacturing and installing power & free conveyors for blue chip organizations.

The most critical factor was being able to remove the old conveyor and install the new system, all 1,200ft of power & free conveyor plus hundreds of feet of free track in a 10 day shutdown window at the end of July 2012 so as not to disrupt production. With careful planning and expert execution this was achieved successfully.

The system is no ordinary conveyor, because it must handle very heavy loads up to 50ft long but which are also highly valuable precision pieces of engineering. The conveyor needed to incorporate multi level chains working off unique triple & double sprocket drives to keep all chains in perfect synchronization, and special transfer conveyors to traverse the long loads through the load, spray, oven and unload stations. The plant works 24 hours a day, seven days a week to keep up with demand, so finding a conveyor with a proven ‘track’ record was important to Airbus.

The system is fully automatic with touch screen HMI interface allowing operators to monitoring every stage of the process.
